
A positive approach to a young person’s health is guaranteed.
There must be consent for medical treatment for all young people being accommodated. Where the child is of sufficient understanding, medical treatment will only be given with their consent.
Awareness, understanding and advice will also be sought regarding Children Act 1989 Vol.4. Residential care 1:100 p.21 that refers to children 16 years of age and over should, in general, be entrusted with the retention and administration of their own medication and be provided with a secure place to keep medication.
Serious illness or accident by a young person will be reported to OFSTED and the placing authority. The health authority will be notified in circumstances that result in the death of a young person or outbreak of any infectious disease.
PROACTIVE ACTION WILL INCLUDE:

General surveillance

Physical and sexual health education care activity plan

Monitoring individual developmental progress

Health nutritional diet

Medical examination and written health assessment as soon as possible after admission. Annually thereafter

Education on issues such as alcohol and substance abuse, HIV and AIDS

Storage of medication in a locked cabinet
IMMEDIATE ACTION WILL INCLUDE:

ROUTINE ACTION WILL INCLUDE:

Maintain links with current GP, Dentist if distance allows

Young people to have some choice of GP

Permission for medicals & routine treatment will be sought from parents or those with parental responsibility

Recording the administration of medicine

All medication is stored in a locked cabinet

All administration of medicine is recorded by staff who will log date/time/dosage/name of medication/reason for being administered/name of staff and countersigned.

Arrangements made to ensure that parents or those will parental responsibility are routinely kept informed of their Childs health.
